Located in Richmond, a stone’s throw away from the Yarra
River and Hawthorn, the Royston is a funky and modern but
comfortable and welcoming local pub.
The Royston is the quintessential local pub. We commonly
hear “I didn’t even know there was a pub here.” This might be
because it is halfway down a dead-end street between the Yarra
River and the industrial heart of Richmond, one of Melbourne’s
oldest working class suburbs.
Go back 50 years and the big building next to the pub on
North Street was a tannery. The art deco floor tiles
in the front bar sloped in towards the drain holes in the centre to
allow easy washing out (they still do, but these days it’s not
something we have to do too often!) The Royston was a pub catering
to the working men from the cottages and factories that surrounded
it.
Fast forward to today. Many of the cottages are still there
but most of the residents have changed. There are more apartments
than factories surrounding the pub and the tannery is now home to
Mountain Goat Brewery – one of the leading microbreweries in
Victoria. And after a renovation in
early 2005, the Royston is once again an important and relevant
part of the local neighbourhood. (And now we serve
women!)
This small pub comprises front bar, dining room and pool
room.
